Ester Gonçalves

She began her dance journey in 2011 at the age of 14, taking classical and contemporary dance classes at Quorum Academy. From 2012 to 2014, she was part of Projecto Quorum, a youth company created by the academy, working with choreographers such as Daniel Cardoso, Gonçalo Lobato, Elson Ferreira, Filipe Narciso, Inês Godinho, and Jácome Filipe, while also performing pieces from Quorum Ballet’s repertoire.

 

In 2013, she was invited to attend Quorum Ballet’s company classes, and in 2014, she joined as an intern, participating in rehearsals and performances. By 2015, she became a professional dancer with the company, performing in all productions until July 2018, both nationally and internationally. Highlights of her time with Quorum Ballet include a one-month international residency in China (January 2018) with choreographer Xie Xin, as well as working with Donald Byrd, Daniel Cardoso, Jácome Filipe, Elson Ferreira, and Inês Godinho. With the company, she performed in Portugal, Denmark, China, Finland, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, and Romania.

 

In July 2018, she transitioned to freelancing, participating in the Metamorphosis International Residency with Iratxe Ansa and Igor Bacovich. She then joined the cast of “A Dança das Raias Voadoras” by Companhia de Actores and performed in the opera “Alceste” by Gluck at Teatro Nacional de São Carlos.

 

In September 2019, she performed in “Last” by São Castro and António Cabrita with Companhia Paulo Ribeiro. More recently, she was part of “Orphée et Eurydice” in Paris, directed by Denis Chabroullet with São Castro and António Cabrita as choreographic directors.

 

From November 2020 to December 2022, she performed in “Faustless” by Margarida Belo Costa, staging over a dozen shows across Portugal and Luxembourg.

 

In June 2021, she choreographed “Glam Trash” for Projecto Quorum, a group of young dancers. The following month, she participated in the dance film “Renova” (Renova Art Commissions 2021), directed by Margarida Belo Costa with Nuno da Rocha as the musical director.

 

In September and October 2021, she performed “Um Solo para a Sociedade” by São Castro and António Cabrita at the Sharing Across Borders Festival in Cologne, Germany, and at Centro Cultural da Malaposta.

 

In January 2023, she premiered in “Paraíso” by Nuno da Rocha, choreographed by Marcos Morau (La Veronal) at Centro Cultural de Belém, as well as in “Practices of Rebirth” by Margarida Belo Costa.

 

In 2024, she presented the virtual reality project “Ghost Dance” at the InShadow Festival.

 

She has taught Classical and Contemporary Dance at: Arabesque - Escola de Dança, Quorum Academy, MDance and Escola de Dança Ana Kohler.

Currently, she teaches at: UDance School, Dance Factory Studios, Conservatório de Música de Sintra.
